A new nationwide campaign has kicked off to support the families of dead and injured military and paramilitary personnel.
The initiative, called the ‘DEFEND Trust Fund’, aims to raise ₦100 billion.
The campaign, named “100,000 Voices in 100 Days: A National Call to Empower the Families Behind the Uniform,” was introduced in Kaduna by the Lead Advocate of the fund’s campaign, Mohammed Usman-Thompson.
Usman-Thompson explained that the goal is to collect 100,000 signatures from October 6, 2025, to January 14, 2026.
The petition will be presented to the federal government and the National Assembly, asking them to create the DEFEND Trust Fund.
The fund is intended to provide various forms of support to the families of these brave individuals, including scholarships, job training, financial help for businesses, and emotional support, especially for families who have lost their loved ones or those who can no longer serve.
Usman-Thompson shared personal experiences growing up in military barracks, where he often saw more notices of deaths than celebrations.
He highlighted the challenges families face after losing their main providers, emphasizing that the campaign is about justice, dignity, and hope for those who serve.
The campaign aligns with the current government’s aim to help vulnerable groups and support financial inclusion.
The organizers argue that creating this fund is a timely way to honor the sacrifices made by those who defend the nation.

In collaboration with the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), the campaign recognizes the important role of the media in spreading awareness and engaging the public.
The campaign draws inspiration from international examples in countries like the UK, Canada, Australia, and the United States, which have established programs to support military families.
The initiative encourages Nigeria to follow this lead and ensure that the families of those who protect national security receive necessary support.
The campaign calls on everyone, civilians, military personnel, local organizations, and lawmakers, to sign the petition online at www.supportdtf.org and add their voices to this important cause.
Usman-Thompson expressed gratitude to the media for their coverage, stating that “your voices are crucial in helping us turn public opinion into public policy.
“Together, we can make the DEFEND Trust Fund a reality.”
