The Mamman Legacy Initiative (MLI) has accused the Taraba State government of orchestrating a campaign of intimidation against the former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial elections.

In a statement released Monday to journalists in Jalingo, the group accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of being deployed as a tool to undermine the former minister.

It described the situation as a “calculated and systematic attempt” to weaken a perceived political contender gaining traction within the state.

Central to the group’s claims is a recent security operation in which operatives reportedly surrounded Mamman’s residence.

According to the MLI, the action was deliberately timed to disrupt a planned homecoming rally scheduled for April 4, an event expected to draw significant public support.

The group alleged that the move was aimed at intimidating Mamman’s supporters and severing his growing connection with grassroots constituents across Taraba State.

Also, the MLI in the statement signed by its Coordinator, Musa Mustapha, also dismissed the corruption allegations previously leveled against Mamman, including widely circulated claims of hidden cash.

The group described the accusations as unsubstantiated and lacking credible evidence, insisting they form part of a broader smear campaign.

The initiative further argued that the alleged actions are politically motivated, pointing to Mamman’s increasing grassroots appeal as a source of concern for the current administration.

It accused political actors of relying on legal and institutional pressure rather than engaging in issue-based competition.

“These actions raise serious concerns about the state of democratic processes and political tolerance,” the statement read, questioning whether citizens are being penalized for participating in political activities.

Although Saleh Mamman, who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari, has not formally declared his candidacy, speculation surrounding his potential entry into the 2027 governorship race continues to intensify.

Beyond the immediate allegations, MLI called on the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to ensure transparency and fairness in its candidate selection process.

The group referenced controversies surrounding the party’s 2023 gubernatorial primaries in Taraba State, urging reforms to strengthen internal democracy ahead of the next election cycle.

Meanwhile, the MLI has urged supporters of the former minister to remain calm, expressing confidence that “truth and justice will ultimately prevail” despite the mounting political tension.
