Elder statesman and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has condemned the recent wave of defections by prominent PDP leaders to the newly adopted opposition coalition platform, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the move as “uncalled for” and rooted in what he termed “existential imbecility and docility.”

In a passionate TV interview, the former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP expressed dismay over the defection trend, urging aggrieved members to remain committed to the party and work collectively to resolve its internal challenges.

“As a retired General, before you act, you must assess the situation. What is the cause of this? Why abandon the very platform that built you because of temporary setbacks?” George questioned, warning that such political decisions could damage the foundation of the opposition.

He likened the PDP’s current struggles to a leaking roof in a family house, stressing that loyalty and resilience are key in moments of crisis.

“This is your father’s house, the same party that made you, gave you recognition, and brought you to national prominence. You don’t flee at the first sign of trouble. If your house has a leaking roof, do you abandon it? No, you stay and fix it,” George stated.

The PDP stalwart’s comments come amid a political shake-up following mass resignations by senior PDP figures who recently joined the ADC. The defectors argue that their decision is part of a broader plan to form a united front capable of defeating President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

However, George has warned that abandoning the PDP instead of addressing its internal rifts could weaken the opposition further. He called on members contemplating defection to reconsider and embrace the hard work of rebuilding the party from within, ahead of the next electoral cycle.
