Argentina and the football world are mourning the death of legendary Boca Juniors manager Miguel Ángel Russo, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 69 after a prolonged battle with prostate cancer.
Boca Juniors confirmed his death in a heartfelt statement, expressing “deep sorrow” and describing Russo as “a man who leaves an unforgettable legacy of joy, warmth, and commitment.” The club said his influence on Boca’s history “will never fade.”
Russo was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017, which forced him to step back from coaching duties at various points in his career. His last public appearance came on September 21, when Boca drew 2-2 with Central Córdoba in the Argentine Primera División.

The club’s Uruguayan striker, Edinson Cavani, also paid tribute on Instagram, writing, “Thank you, Miguel, for teaching us the true meaning of courage.”
During his absence, assistant coach Claudio Úbeda led the team, but Russo continued to offer strategic guidance and moral support behind the scenes.
A revered tactician and a lifelong student of the game, Russo enjoyed three successful spells as Boca Juniors’ head coach. He guided the team to glory in the 2007 Copa Libertadores, reclaimed domestic supremacy with the 2019–20 Argentine Superliga title, and recently led Boca to another appearance on the global stage at the FIFA Club World Cup.
Before his coaching career, Russo had a distinguished playing history with Estudiantes, making more than 400 appearances and earning 17 caps for Argentina as a midfielder.
In June, he made a remarkable return to Boca for a third stint as manager, just four years after being dismissed early in the 2021 season. His resilience and quiet strength inspired generations of players and fans alike.
Russo’s passing marks the end of an era for Argentine football, leaving behind not only trophies but a reputation built on humility, discipline, and passion for the beautiful game.
