A major power outage has plunged the four states of Taraba, Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe into total darkness following the commencement of extensive transmission line upgrades.
The blackout began at 10:00 am on Tuesday, June 10, and is expected to persist until 5:00 pm on Saturday, June 14.
The outage, at the time of filing this report, has already disrupted daily life and economic activities across the affected states.
In a public announcement, the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) said the outage is necessary to facilitate critical maintenance and infrastructure upgrades by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
The works, according to the company. involve the installation of new towers at the Bauchi 330kV station and the reconfiguration of the existing Jos-Gombe 330kV and Jos-Bauchi-Gombe 132kV transmission lines.

Due to these works, major cities such as Damaturu, Molai, Yola, and Jalingo have been cut off from power, as their injection sub-stations will remain offline during the upgrade period.
To cushion the impact, YEDC and TCN have put in place temporary supply arrangements for select areas.
Biu will receive electricity from the Dadi Kowa hydro plant, Maiduguri’s Baga Road sub-station will be powered through the MEPP facility, and the Nguru–Machina axis will get supply via the 33kV Nguru feeder.
The YEDC emphasized that the upgrade project is entirely led by TCN and is intended to enhance the stability and reliability of power supply in the North East region.
“Power supply will be fully restored once TCN completes and confirms the successful execution of the transmission line work,” the company said in its statement, while thanking customers for their patience and cooperation during the period of disruption.
