The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga, has condemned the rising tide of politically motivated killings in Nigeria’s South-East region, describing it as a tragic shedding of innocent blood.
Speaking on Sunday during the Thanksgiving Mass and Empowerment Programme hosted by Senator Kelvin Chukwu of Enugu East Senatorial Zone, Onaga called on perpetrators of such heinous acts to turn away from their evil deeds.
“Anyone engaging in this unholy act will not escape the consequences and wrath of God,” the bishop warned. “No one has the right to terminate a life they cannot create, regardless of any acrimony or quarrel.”
The bishop expressed deep sorrow over the brutal murder of Chief Oyibo Chukwu, the Labour Party Senatorial candidate for Enugu East in the 2023 elections. Oyibo’s assassination paved the way for his younger brother, Senator Kelvin Chukwu, to assume the position.
Onaga also highlighted the murder of Stephen Aniagu, the chairman of the Ogbete Market Traders Association, and other victims of political violence. He reminded the congregation that death is inevitable for all, urging people to live meaningful and righteous lives.

Senator Kelvin Chukwu’s empowerment initiative was praised as a demonstration of effective representation. Items distributed included motorcycles, grinding machines, sewing machines, refrigerators, fertilizers, and bags of rice. Special attention was given to 25 persons with disabilities, who received grinding machines.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Ben Nwoye, the former chairman of the APC in Enugu State, commended Senator Chukwu’s efforts, describing the programme as a testament to true democracy. “We are here to promote good governance, beyond party lines,” Nwoye said, urging beneficiaries to make the most of the items they received.
In his address, Senator Chukwu expressed gratitude to his colleagues in the National Assembly for their solidarity and assured his constituents of continued quality representation.
“I have sponsored bills to improve the lives of Nigerians and attracted various projects in electricity, healthcare, and roads to our zone,” Chukwu said. “For those yet to benefit from this empowerment programme, be patient – your turn will come soon.”
Senator Victor Umeh of Anambra Central also applauded Chukwu for his dedication, calling the empowerment initiative a vital step in delivering the dividends of democracy.
One of the beneficiaries, Emeka Ugwuani, a physically challenged man, expressed heartfelt thanks to Senator Chukwu. “May God continue to bless and protect you,” he prayed.
