Students from Bayelsa State have continued to demonstrate excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) related courses, with sterling performance in national competitions.

Students of Bishop Dimeari Grammar School (BDGS), Yenagoa, emerged second runners-up at the National Young Engineers and Future Leaders Secondary Schools Competition held in Ibadan, Oyo State.

In 2025, students of Government Model Secondary School, Ogbia, also emerged second runners-up in the National Robotics Competition held in Abuja.

It was learnt that the feat by the students is attributable to the Bayelsa State Education Development Trust Fund’s investment in coding and robotics.

Two students of BDGS, Master Charis Gabriel and Fetongha Wilberforce all in SS 11, stunned the audience with their coding and robotics project on flood detection and emergency response.

Speaking on Wednesday in Yenagoa, on behalf of the robotics team, Gabriel and the ICT tutor, Arnold Ayebadieye, appreciated the trust fund for the opportunity.

They said the introduction of coding and robotics in secondary schools paved the way for their outstanding performance.

Speaking on the various interventions from the trust fund in the school, the Principal of BDGS, Mrs. Beauty Asamawei, lauded the fund for the numerous interventions in the school and for sponsoring the students’ participation in the recent national science competition.

“My boys travelled to Ibadan for the contest under the sponsorship of the EDTF and brought laurels and joy to all of us. The support is appreciated and highly commendable,” she said.

Receiving the team in his office, the Executive Secretary of EDTF, Prof. Ebimieowei Etebu, said the students have made the state proud and justified the investment of the fund in coding and robotics for schools in the state.

Prof. Etebu said the achievement of the team is a signal of hope for young scientists who will think and provide solutions to the myriad of problems in their environment.

The competition, which started at the state level with public and private schools participating, saw the BDGS emerging as the winner to represent the state at the regional level.

At the finals held at the University of Ibadan campus, Shalom Science and Technical College, Enugu emerged overall winners, Kings College, Lagos clinched the second position, while the BDGS emerged third with a cash prize of N350,000.
