The Bayelsa State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Inspector Sunday Ideh, who was caught assaulting his three children over accusations of witchcraft. The command has also ordered a mental health evaluation to determine the officer’s psychological state before prosecution begins.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Sanusi Mohammed, disclosed this in Yenagoa when members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) paid a visit to the command headquarters. The delegation was led by NBA Vice Chairman, Dr. Vivien Brisibe, and FIDA Bayelsa Chairperson, Dr. Boma Miebaiwho.
Mohammed assured that the matter would not be swept under the carpet, noting that although Inspector Ideh was considered a disciplined officer before the shocking incident, the police will ensure a thorough and transparent prosecution.
Dr. Brisibe, in her remarks, condemned the assault as disturbing and unacceptable, especially coming from a law enforcement officer sworn to protect lives. She urged the police to file serious charges, including attempted murder, stressing that leniency would send the wrong message about accountability within the force.

In a letter signed by its founder, Dr. Dise Ogbise Goddy-Harry, the organization urged the police to ensure that justice is served and the children receive adequate rehabilitation and protection.
The disturbing incident has sparked outrage across Bayelsa, with legal bodies, women’s groups, and civil society organizations demanding a strong example be made to deter future cases of child abuse, especially by officers of the law.
