Gunmen, in the early hours of Wednesday, stormed the residence of a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Hon. Sunday Frank-Oputu and shot him dead in Yenagoa, the State Capital The Trumpet gathered.

It was gathered that Frank-Oputu, who had also served as State Chairman of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), was murdered at his residence at Bay-Bridge, Yenagoa.

Sunday Frank-Oputu, who can be best described as the voice of the opposition party in Bayelsa State, was also having running litigations in his party, the APC, and his community in Southern Ijaw local government area.

He was among those who opposed the control of the APC leadership style of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva.

Though he had repeatedly claimed that he did not have any personal grouse with Chief Sylva but only differed with his style of party leadership. he was also a member of the faction of the APC loyal to the former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Senator Heineken Lokpobiri.

But the Sylva led APC, had also last year expelled Sunday Frank-Oputu alongside eight others for alleged anti-Party activities.

Sources also claimed that he was at the forefront of the struggle to extricate his community from the firm control of illegal oil bunkering by some unrepentant militants in the Egbematoru axis.

The spokesman of the Bayelsa State Police Command, Superintendent of Police, Asinimi Bustwat, confirmed the incident, and said, details would be made available to journalists later as investigations had started.
