The Bauchi State High Court has sentenced two convicted armed robbers to death by hanging and handed life imprisonment to seven others for offences including rape, kidnapping and culpable homicide.

The verdicts were part of 51 criminal cases concluded in the last quarter of 2025, involving 64 convicts tried for offences ranging from robbery and conspiracy to homicide and fraud.

Those sentenced to death are Muhammad Maina and Yakubu Adamu, who were found guilty of armed robbery.

The court ruled that overwhelming evidence presented by prosecutors proved their involvement in violent robbery incidents across the state.

Citing the severity of the crimes, the judge imposed the maximum penalty under the law.

Seven other defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment without the option of fine after being convicted of offences including rape, conspiracy, robbery, culpable homicide and kidnapping.

They are Shehu Isa; Adamu Adamu, also known as Nalele; Mohammed Bello; Kabiru Ahmed; Muhammad Jibrin, also known as Al-Amin; Usman Bello, also known as Maigamo; and Manu Umaru, also known as Alhaji Manu.

In addition, 11 individuals described as fraudsters were sentenced to three months’ imprisonment without the option of fine.

They are Abubakar Shehu, Yusuf Aliyu Alhassan, Miracle Chidi, Dominic Lazarus, James Myaulompwa, Lawus Zakka, Sadiq Dosumo, Jude Titus, Joseph Olamide Adesunmila, Koche Samuel and Falour Odinaka.

Other convicts received varying prison terms ranging from three months to 10 years.

Some were given the option of fines, which ranged between ₦10,000 and ₦500,000, depending on the nature and gravity of their offences.

The convictions were secured under various legal provisions, including Section 97 of the Penal Code; Sections 1(2)(b) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, 2004; and relevant sections of the Bauchi State Penal Code.

The court expressed concern over the persistent threat of kidnapping and violent crime in the state, stressing that the stiff penalties were intended to serve as a deterrent to criminal activity.
