Aitana Bonmati has been discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment for viral meningitis, just days before Euro 2025 begins.
The 27-year-old Spanish midfielder, who has won the Ballon d’Or for the past two years, missed a friendly match against Japan in Leganes, Spain, on Friday due to her condition.
She did not participate in training on Thursday and was admitted to a Madrid hospital on Friday.
The Spanish Football Federation announced that the Barcelona player will rejoin the national team “in the coming days,” as the squad is set to travel to Switzerland on Sunday afternoon.
Euro 2025 kicks off in Switzerland on Wednesday, with Spain facing Portugal in their first Group B match in Bern on Thursday.

Bonmati expressed her gratitude on Instagram, saying “thank you to everyone for the messages I’ve received and to those who have supported me these past few days.
“Fortunately, everything is going well. I hope to be back soon.”
With 30 goals in 78 appearances for Spain, Bonmati played a crucial role in the team’s victories at the 2023 World Cup and last year’s Nations League.
Before Bonmati was discharged, Spain’s coach Montse Tome remarked that “she is a very important player for us. We’ll wait for her as long as we can.”
Meningitis is an infection affecting the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord, and it can be serious if not addressed promptly.
