Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu, has emphasized the urgent need for stronger collaboration among all arms of government to ensure sustainable financial management and drive national development. Speaking at a high-level interactive session on economic management and national progress in Abuja on Thursday, Bagudu underscored the importance of knowledge-sharing between the executive, legislature, and judiciary.

The event, attended by members of the National Assembly and heads of key government agencies, highlighted the crucial role of synergy in delivering effective governance. Bagudu warned that failure to foster cooperation could result in missed opportunities to enhance government policies and programs.

“Moments like this provide a platform for exchanging ideas and knowledge,” he stated, explaining that while the three arms of government function independently, the 1999 Constitution mandates them to work together for the collective good of the nation.

Citing Chapter 2 of the Constitution, which outlines the fundamental objectives and directive principles of state policy, Bagudu stressed that all those in authority—whether in the executive, legislative, or judicial branches—are bound to observe and uphold these principles. “If we seek a unifying command that directs those in power, this is it,” he asserted.

Beyond constitutional obligations, the minister highlighted the evolving global economic landscape and Nigeria’s growing population as key reasons why seamless collaboration is essential. He argued that without a shared approach to financial management, sustainable growth would remain elusive.

Bagudu also praised the current cooperation between the National Assembly and the executive, noting that it aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to ministers to maintain close ties with the federal legislature.

As Nigeria navigates economic challenges, the minister’s call for unity among government institutions signals a push for more effective governance, reinforcing the need for a collective approach to financial planning and national development.
