On October 20, 2025, a significant outage at Amazon Web Services (AWS) disrupted operations for numerous major websites and applications worldwide, highlighting the critical role cloud infrastructure plays in the digital ecosystem. The incident, which began in the early hours, affected services reliant on AWS’s cloud computing capabilities, leading to widespread connectivity issues. AWS later confirmed that the underlying problem had been resolved, allowing services to begin recovery.

The disruption originated from an internal issue within AWS, specifically linked to a database problem in the US-East region, which cascaded into broader global impacts.

Reports indicate the outage started around 3-4 AM ET, with users noticing failures in accessing popular platforms. AWS’s status dashboard initially reported elevated error rates, and the company acknowledged the problem, stating engineers were “actively working on both mitigating the issue and fully understanding the root cause.”

According to updates, the root cause appeared to involve DNS resolution failures, which prevented proper routing of internet traffic to affected services.

This led to a chain reaction, as many websites and apps depend on AWS for hosting, storage, and other backend operations. By mid-morning, AWS announced that the issue was “fully mitigated,” with most services returning to normal, though some residual throttling or delays were possible as systems stabilized.

The outage’s reach was extensive, taking down or severely impairing several high-profile platforms. Users reported issues with:
Social Media and Communication: Snapchat experienced global downtime, preventing users from sending snaps or loading stories.

Reddit saw a surge in outage reports, with nearly 50% recovery by 4 AM ET, but initial disruptions affected browsing and posting.

Gaming and Entertainment: Roblox, Fortnite, and other gaming services went dark, frustrating players during peak hours in various time zones.

Amazon’s own consumer products, like Alexa and Ring, were also impacted, with smart home devices failing to respond.

E-Commerce and Business Tools: Amazon’s e-commerce platform faced intermittent issues, alongside other sites hosted on AWS. Even financial institutions in regions like the UK reported service disruptions, though not directly confirmed as AWS-related.

Downdetector and similar monitoring sites logged thousands of complaints, underscoring the outage’s scale. In Europe, the incident fueled discussions about reducing reliance on US-based tech giants, with calls for more diversified infrastructure.

Cloud computing experts suggest the outage was unlikely due to a cyberattack, pointing instead to internal technical failures.

Amro al-Said Ahmad, a lecturer at Keele University, emphasized that such events expose vulnerabilities in centralized cloud systems, even as they are designed for high availability. On social media platform X (formerly Twitter), reactions ranged from frustration to calls for greater decentralization. One user noted, “AWS outage today shows how fragile our ‘decentralized’ systems really are,” advocating for independent hardware setups beyond major cloud providers.

In the blockchain space, Solana’s resilience was highlighted, as its distributed validators across global regions continued operations unaffected, contrasting with some Ethereum ecosystem components that faced issues.

Developers and businesses shared workarounds or the lack thereof, with one X user lamenting, “My shit is down and I can’t deploy work-arounds because Vercel uses AWS for builds.”

Others humorously dubbed it a “chill day at work” or an unintended “alarm clock.”

By approximately 7:15 AM ET, AWS confirmed full mitigation, and affected services like Reddit and Snapchat began seeing user reports decline sharply.

While the immediate crisis has passed, the event serves as a reminder of the internet’s interconnectedness. AWS, which powers a substantial portion of the web, has faced similar incidents in the past, prompting companies to explore multi-cloud strategies or enhanced redundancy. As digital reliance grows, stakeholders are likely to push for more robust failover mechanisms. For now, the global internet breathes a sigh of relief as normalcy returns, but the outage underscores the need for ongoing vigilance in cloud infrastructure management.
