The Ebonyi State Government has approved a new minimum wage of N90,000 for its workers, raising salaries from the previous N70,000. The announcement was made on Thursday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Chief Ikeuwa Omebe, following the State Executive Council meeting in Abakaliki. Omebe said the increment takes immediate effect and reflects the government’s commitment to improving the living conditions of workers at a time when many Nigerians are struggling with the rising cost of living. He stressed that the wage increase is not a political gimmick but a genuine step to prioritize workers’ welfare. In addition to the wage increase, the state government confirmed it has fully settled outstanding pension and gratuity arrears owed to retirees since the creation of Ebonyi in 1996. A verification exercise for local government retirees is already ongoing, after which payments will commence. The commissioner explained that the government’s actions are driven by a commitment to both human development and infrastructural growth. He added that the State Executive Council also approved a new civil service policy mandating directors who have served for eight years to proceed on retirement, a move designed to inject fresh leadership into the system. With this development, Ebonyi now joins the list of states taking bold steps to cushion the economic pressures on workers while reinforcing a strong welfare and governance structure.
