Abba Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has formally joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring his commitment to work against his father’s 2027 presidential ambition.
The announcement was made on Monday during a formal reception at the APC state secretariat in Yola, where Abba Atiku was received amid a carnival-like atmosphere by party supporters, youth groups, and members of the APC.
Addressing the gathering, the Adamawa APC Chairman, Shuaibu Idris, described the defection as a sign of growing national acceptance for President Bola Tinubu, even among opposition circles.
Idris said the move by the son of a leading opposition figure underscored Tinubu’s expanding influence and appeal across party lines.
“He has demonstrated a clear and unambiguous commitment to Tinubu’s leadership,” Idris said.
“This decision speaks volumes about the direction of the country and the confidence Nigerians have in his administration.”
He praised Abba Atiku for what he called a “bold and patriotic” choice, urging party members to welcome him and ensure equal opportunities within the party.
An APC youth leader, Jamilu Danumma, described the defection as a significant boost for the party ahead of 2027, noting that Abba Atiku joined with his national political structure.
Danumma added that Abba Atiku completed his registration at the APC Gwadabawa Ward before proceeding to the state secretariat for the formal reception.
The APC’s Organising Secretary in the state, Mustapha Ribadu, described the event as historic, noting it coincided with the alignment of Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, with the APC on the same day.

“We are grateful to receive two Abba today, one in Kano and one in Adamawa,” Ribadu said.
“Abba Atiku has shown clarity of judgment, wisdom, and political foresight.”
After his formal registration, Abba Atiku praised party members for the warm reception and reiterated his loyalty to the APC.
He called on party members to unite and work towards President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
“We must work together and do everything possible to ensure the victory of President Bola Tinubu in 2027,” Atiku said.
