Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and other Nigerians have expressed their admiration for Nigeria’s Super Eagles after their impressive 4-1 victory against Gabon in the 2026 CAF World Cup playoffs.

The match, held at the Moulay Hassan Stadium on Thursday, secured Nigeria’s place in the final World Cup playoffs, thanks to goals from Akor Adams, Chidera Ejuke, and a double from Victor Osimhen.

Following the game, fans took to social media to celebrate the win and encouraged the team to stay focused ahead of their upcoming match against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday.

On his official X account, former Vice President Abubakar expressed his pride in the team, stating, “Proud of the @NGSuperEagles for giving Nigeria a fighting chance in the 2026 World Cup Africa playoff final. -AA.”

Meanwhile, Obi remarked that the team’s performance highlights the importance of investing in talent.

He shared, “After a busy day that took me from Lagos to Abuja for the Guild of Editors event and then on to Anambra, I made sure to catch the Super Eagles match against Gabon.

My excitement after the match for the sweet victory made me forget my usual immediate tweet after their games.

I sincerely congratulate our Super Eagles on their outstanding and well-deserved victory today.

Their performance reminds us that when we invest in talent and support our institutions, Nigeria can compete and win on any global stage.

Today, the Super Eagles have made us proud, and I celebrate them, the coaching staff, and every Nigerian who believes in the possibility of a better, stronger, and more united Nigeria. Well done, Eagles. Keep soaring. -PO.”

Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar commended the team for their discipline, stating, “Congratulations to our national team @NGSuperEagles on their stunning 4-1 comeback victory over Gabon to secure a place in the final playoff.

Well done to the team for staying disciplined and finishing strong.”

Another user on X, Joshua Sogunle, praised the team’s performance, saying, “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the Super Eagles play this well.

Their hunger, dribbling, passing accuracy, and technical efficiency showcased monstrous control of the game. We wouldn’t have been in the playoffs if we had played half the qualifiers like this. Watching the Super Eagles today, I don’t miss European football.

I never thought African football could be this beautiful to watch. The team should remain focused; we still have challenges ahead.”

The winner of the match between Nigeria and DRC will qualify for a six-nation FIFA intercontinental tournament in March.
