Asue Ighodalo, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2024 Edo State election, has responded to the Supreme Court’s ruling that upheld the outcome of the September 2024 poll.
In a heartfelt statement titled “Final Statement on the Supreme Court Judgement in the Edo Governorship Election Petition”, Ighodalo accepted the finality of the Supreme Court’s decision but strongly criticized the judgment and the electoral process that led to it. He described the election as “not a contest” but “a robbery” that was “coordinated, deliberate,” and now “tragically validated by the highest court in the land.”
Ighodalo expressed deep disappointment in the institutions that were expected to protect Nigeria’s democracy, accusing them of failing the people. “You came out in hope. You voted for competence, for progress, for prosperity. And now, we are told that your voice does not matter,” he lamented, addressing his supporters.

He vowed never to forget the courage and passion shown by the people of Edo State during the election period, emphasizing that even though the office was not won, something greater had been achieved, unity, awareness, and collective strength.
In an emotionally charged tone, Ighodalo warned that the consequences of the “illegitimacy” validated by the court could haunt Edo State, manifesting in poor governance, bad policies, and worsening living conditions. Still, he maintained a tone of resilience, urging supporters not to retreat or be silenced.
To those who now hold office, he advised: “Lead with humility. Govern with conscience. History sees what the courts may not. And one day, it will deliver its own verdict.” he concludes.
