Arsenal scored from two trademark corners to beat 10-man Chelsea at Emirates Stadium and regain their five-point lead at the top of the Premier League.
Manchester City had heaped pressure on the Gunners by cutting their lead to two points with victory at Leeds on Saturday. But when it mattered, Mikel Arteta’s side once again turned to their most reliable weapon: the corner flag.
After a cagey opening with few clear chances, Arsenal struck in the 21st minute. Gabriel Magalhaes headed Bukayo Saka’s corner back across goal to defensive partner William Saliba. His header struck Mamadou Sarr on the arm before finding the net.
Chelsea responded well and began to threaten from their own set-pieces. Just before half-time they drew level when Piero Hincapie flicked Reece James’ delivery into his own net.
The visitors started the second half brighter, creating a nervous atmosphere inside the stadium. But Arsenal’s dominance from dead-ball situations proved decisive again.
In the 66th minute, Jurrien Timber powered in Declan Rice’s corner Arsenal’s 16th goal from a corner this season to restore the lead.
Arteta introduced Gabriel Martinelli from the bench to inject pace on the break, and when the winger threatened to launch a counter-attack he was cynically brought down by Pedro Neto.
Already on a yellow card, Neto saw red with 20 minutes remaining.
It was Chelsea’s seventh league dismissal of the campaign and ninth in all competitions, further undermining their hopes of mounting a comeback.
Liam Delap thought he had salvaged a late point when he bundled home, but Joao Pedro was clearly offside in the build-up and the goal was ruled out.
Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya produced two excellent saves to preserve the advantage as the hosts showed the resilience of potential champions.
The win moves Arsenal to 64 points, five clear of Manchester City albeit having played a game more as they chase a first league title since 2004.
Arsenal’s threat from corners is no secret. Opponents prepare meticulously and yet still struggle to contain it.
Their tally of 16 goals from corners equals the most by any side in a single Premier League season, alongside Oldham Athletic in 1992-93, West Bromwich Albion in 2016-17, and Arsenal themselves in 2023-24.
They have also gone 1-0 up from a corner on nine occasions this term, a feat matched only by Southampton in 1994-95.
This was not Arsenal’s most fluid display, but it was a performance defined by character and ruthlessness at key moments, qualities that define champions.
For Chelsea, the pattern was painfully familiar. Despite spells of promise and quality delivery from James, they once again faltered defensively.
Head coach Liam Rosenior had spoken of improving discipline, yet his side have now seen red cards in consecutive matches.

Neto will miss the midweek trip to Aston Villa, compounding selection issues with Cole Palmer struggling with fitness and both Estevao Willian and Jamie Gittens sidelined through injury.
The dismissal came a week after Wesley Fofana was sent off in the draw against Burnley, when Zian Flemming headed a stoppage-time equaliser from a corner.
Chelsea have not beaten Arsenal since the days of Thomas Tuchel’s management and Roman Abramovich’s ownership. With rivals Manchester United and Liverpool both winning this weekend, further ground has been lost in the race for European qualification.
For Arsenal, however, the mood was one of belief. When the pressure mounted, they turned once more to a well-rehearsed routine and found a title-defining response.
