The Nigerian Army has promised a thorough and swift investigation following the death of a commercial bus driver allegedly caused by a soldier at a military checkpoint in Akunu-Akoko, Ondo State.
The 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure, disclosed this in a statement signed by Maj. Njoka Irabor, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, assuring the public that the soldier involved would face full disciplinary action.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred on Sunday, October 13, when the driver, who was heading from Akure to Abuja, stopped near a military checkpoint due to mechanical problems. Passengers reportedly demanded a refund of their fares after the delay. In an attempt to resolve the issue, one of the passengers approached a soldier at the checkpoint for assistance.
The situation quickly turned violent after the soldier allegedly acted unprofessionally, leading to a confrontation that resulted in serious injuries to the driver. The 32 Artillery Brigade immediately intervened, rushing the victim to a nearby medical facility and paying all medical bills. He was later transferred to the Ondo State Specialist Hospital in Akure for further treatment. Sadly, he died the following day, October 14.
