The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into the killing of a 13-year-old boy, Timothy Daniel, who was allegedly shot by a soldier in Akwa Ibom State, urging the public to refrain from speculation while inquiries are ongoing.
The incident occurred on January 1, 2026, at Ette community in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, where the soldier was reportedly deployed to Sterling Petrochemical and Fertiliser Limited.
Based on allegations that have been circulating online, the minor was shot while attempting to stop the soldier from making alleged inappropriate advances towards his 15-year-old sister, Miracle Daniel. However, the Army has stressed that these claims remain unverified and subject to investigation.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Captain Lawal Muhammad, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations at Headquarters 2 Brigade, Uyo, said no conclusions had been reached regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“In accordance with standard procedures, the Nigerian Army has initiated an investigation to determine the facts and circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident involving a minor, Timothy Daniel (13 years old), which occurred on January 1, 2026, in Ette, Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State,” the statement read.

Captain Muhammad emphasised that the investigation is still in progress and cautioned members of the public against making comments that could compromise the process.
“The investigation is ongoing, and no conclusions have been reached at this time. Therefore, the Nigerian Army calls on the public to refrain from speculation or comments that may hinder the investigative process,” he said.
He added that the findings of the probe would be made public upon completion, in line with applicable laws and regulations.
The Army also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, describing the incident as unfortunate.
“The Nigerian Army expresses its heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the family and loved ones of Timothy Daniel and shares in their grief. We pray for the peace of his soul,” the statement concluded.
The Army reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, strict adherence to rules of engagement, and accountability in the conduct of its personnel.
