The army has launched an investigation into the death of a 13-year-old boy who was reportedly shot by a soldier in the Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The incident is said to have taken place in the early hours of January 1, 2026, along Akongntekong Road in the Ete community, sparking outrage and tension among residents.
The Army Public Relations Officer for the 2nd Brigade, Capt. Lawal Mohammed confirmed that the case has been referred to the military police for a thorough investigation, assuring that proper procedures will be followed.
Witnesses reported that the victim, identified as Timothy Daniel, was returning home from a New Year’s Eve church service with his 15-year-old sister, Miracle Daniel, when the incident occurred around 12:05 a.m.
An eyewitness, Anthony Akpan, said the soldier, who was on guard duty at a residence reportedly housing expatriates, allegedly pursued the girl and made inappropriate advances.

When she resisted, the soldier reportedly became aggressive.
Timothy confronted the soldier about the alleged harassment of his sister, which led to a heated argument that escalated into the soldier firing his weapon, killing the teenager instantly.
The shooting caused panic in the community and disrupted New Year celebrations.
In the unrest that followed, a vehicle belonging to a former political adviser to the Ikot Abasi Local Government Chairman was damaged.
