The Nigerian Army Depot in Zaria, Kaduna State has dismissed media reports alleging that a Gombe State indigene, Ibrahim Nazifi, died during military training at the facility, describing the claims as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on January 23, 2026, the depot said its attention had been drawn to reports claiming that one Ibrahim Nazifi, with application number 90RRI-GO-9017726, died while undergoing training at the depot.

The army categorically stated that no such incident occurred at the depot.

The statement said official records show that Nazifi successfully passed the state recruitment screening exercise conducted in December 2025 and was subsequently shortlisted for training at the depot in Zaria.

However, the army clarified that he never reported to the depot for the commencement of the training and was never admitted into the training programme.

“As a result, the depot has no record of his presence, participation, injury or death during training,” the statement noted.

Signed by Capt Chikadibia Anele, the acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations of the depot, the army called on the Gombe State government and other relevant authorities to carry out a thorough investigation to determine where, when and under what circumstances the reported death occurred, stressing that it did not take place at the army’s depot in Zaria.

The statement further explained that while military training is rigorous and designed to build endurance, resilience and combat readiness, the army maintains strict safety standards, including medical coverage and risk-mitigation measures, to protect trainees and minimise injuries.

It therefore advised the public to disregard the reports and refrain from spreading unverified information capable of misleading the public or tarnishing the image of the army.

The depot reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, transparency and the welfare of all recruits undergoing training in service of the nation.
