Troops of the 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Sector 3 of ‘Operation Whirl Stroke’, have arrested two suspected gun runners in separate intelligence-led operations in Taraba State under ‘Operation Peace Shield’.
The arrests were carried out on January 11, 2026, following credible intelligence, the brigade said in a statement on Monday.
In the first operation, troops, in collaboration with operatives of the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), apprehended a 48-year-old suspect, Christopher Adamu, also known as “Suffer,” at Sebos Joint in the Mayo Dasa area of Jalingo Local Government Area.
Items said to have been recovered from the suspect include a hunter’s identification card, two ATM cards, a national identification card, an Itel keypad mobile phone, six rings, a hand band, and assorted charms.
Preliminary investigations indicated that Adamu was actively involved in illegal arms trafficking.
The statement said that during interrogation, the suspect confessed to working with an accomplice identified as “Chmn” from Shomo Gari in Karim Lamido Local Government Area.
Acting on further intelligence generated from the arrest, troops later apprehended another suspected gun runner, 37-year-old James Yangyang, at Tautre Village on the outskirts of Anguwan Bera in Ardo Kola Local Government Area.
Acting spokesperson of the brigade, Lt. Umar Muhammad, also disclosed in the statement that investigations revealed Adamu allegedly sold an AK-47 rifle to one Bazoe John of Murbai Village, Ardo Kola Local Government Area, in November 2025, suggesting the existence of a wider arms supply network in the state.
Both suspects are currently in military custody and are undergoing further investigation before being handed over to the relevant authorities for prosecution.
Reacting to the development, the Commander of 6 Brigade and Sector 3 ‘Operation Whirl Stroke’, Brig. Gen. Kingsley Uwa commended the troops and intelligence operatives for their professionalism and effective collaboration.
He warned criminals and arms traffickers to desist from illegal activities, stressing that the brigade would not relent in its efforts to rid Taraba State of illegal arms and criminal elements.
