The Federal Capital Territory was thrown into shock on Monday night after popular Arise News anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, tragically lost her life while trying to escape an armed robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.
Confirming the heartbreaking incident, FCT Police Commissioner, CP Ajao Adewale, said Maduagwu jumped from the top floor of her three-storey apartment building in a desperate attempt to flee the robbers. She was found unconscious on the hard cemented ground before being rushed to Maitama General Hospital, where doctors battled to save her life. Despite resuscitation efforts, she was pronounced dead.
Eyewitnesses revealed that vigilantes in the compound raised alarm after finding her badly injured and unresponsive. One of the private security guards on duty sustained a gunshot wound after bravely attempting to confront the armed men.

The robbers, who stormed Unique Apartments near the Gishiri axis of Katampe under Mabushi Division, left residents in fear and confusion. “In the panic that followed, Maduagwu, who lived on the topmost floor, jumped down. The consequences were tragic and very unfortunate,” CP Adewale explained.
The Commissioner announced that a special investigation team, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigation), has been set up to track down the perpetrators. “No stone will be left unturned until the culprits are brought to justice,” he assured, while commiserating with Maduagwu’s family, her colleagues at Arise News, and Nigerians mourning her untimely death.
Somtochukwu Maduagwu, fondly known as Sommie by friends and colleagues, had built a growing reputation as one of Arise TV’s promising young anchors. Her sudden death has sparked an outpouring of grief across the media industry and among viewers who admired her work.
This tragic incident once again highlights the rising insecurity in Abuja and the devastating toll it continues to take on innocent lives.
