The Bayelsa State chapter of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) is sponsoring 35 female students to write the 2026 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination in its commitment to promoting the study of engineering.
The initiative, the association explained, is aimed at increasing the number of female engineers in Nigeria by encouraging female students who have expressed interest in studying engineering at the university level.
The students, selected from various local government areas in the state, were registered for the JAMB examination and will pursue various engineering courses.
Speaking on the initiative, the state Chairman of APWEN, Amalate Obuebite, revealed that this is the second edition of the programme, which aligns with the association’s objective of enhancing female participation in engineering.
“We are thrilled to see the growing interest in engineering among female students in Bayelsa State.

“Last year, we had 18 candidates, and this year, 35. It’s a significant increase, and we’re committed to continuing this initiative,” she said.
Also, Obuebite announced that APWEN members will serve as mentors to the sponsored students throughout their five-year university education, providing guidance and support as they navigate their engineering studies.
The sponsored students expressed their gratitude to the association for the opportunity, promising to excel in their studies and make the association proud.
“We are truly grateful for this support,” said one of the students. “We promise to work hard and become successful engineers.”
