The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D., GCON, has outlined key legislative priorities for 2025, emphasizing the importance of the Appropriation and Tax Reforms Bills currently before the National Assembly.

Delivering his welcome address at the plenary on Tuesday through the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Speaker Abbas reaffirmed the commitment of the 10th House to addressing Nigeria’s socio-economic and political challenges through legislative interventions.

“Our legislative agenda for 2025 prioritizes the passage of the Appropriation Bill and the Tax Reform Bills, both of which are pivotal to economic recovery and fiscal stability,” he said. “These reforms are essential for broadening the tax base, improving compliance, and reducing dependency on external borrowing. The House will ensure these reforms are equitable and considerate of the needs of all Nigerians, particularly the most vulnerable.”

The Speaker noted the importance of meticulous scrutiny of the Federal Government’s 2025 budget to ensure alignment with national objectives and tangible benefits for citizens. He also announced plans for a Citizens’ Town Hall on the budget, aimed at fostering transparency and inclusivity.

Speaker Abbas highlighted progress in the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution, led by the Deputy Speaker. The Constitutional Review Committee has engaged in extensive consultations, reviewing over 350 memoranda submitted by the public.

“The outcomes of this process will address longstanding governance challenges and promote inclusivity, equity, and accountability,” he said.

In addition to constitutional amendments, the House aims to advance legislative frameworks addressing gender equality, electoral reform, and energy infrastructure.

The Speaker reiterated the legislature’s commitment to accountability and public engagement. Initiatives such as the Open Parliament and ‘State of the House’ live chats will remain integral to fostering trust and ensuring responsive governance.

“Nigerians look to us for transparent, responsive, and results-oriented leadership. By embracing direct engagement, we can uphold the ideals of representative democracy,” he added.
