Staff of Ughelli North Local Government Area in Delta State were thrown into apprehension on Wednesday as operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrived at the council secretariat on what was described as a fact-finding mission.
Although details of the visit remain sketchy, sources within the council revealed that the anti-graft agency’s team moved through almost all the offices of the heads of departments, scrutinizing official files and cheque books bearing authorized signatures.
An insider revealed that a staff member whose identity was withheld narrowly avoided being taken away by the operatives during the exercise.
“Yes, EFCC came to our secretariat on Wednesday,” one council worker confirmed.
“They visited nearly all the HODs’ offices, going through files and cheque books.”
Another employee, however, downplayed the incident, describing it as routine.

“It is nothing unusual. They have been visiting other councils, including Burutu. It’s part of their usual tour,” the staffer said.
When contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to the Ughelli North Council Chairman, Mr. Efe Ekete, said the visit was linked to the commission’s verification of projects executed by the local government.
“I am aware they came to inspect our projects and confirm what we have on the ground. Some people have been saying the chairman hasn’t done anything, and several petitions were written.
“The EFCC came to verify our records, the state of projects, and other related matters,” Ekete explained.
