The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured five out of the six chairmanship seats contested in the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections.
Results declared on Sunday by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) showed that the APC won in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abaji, Bwari, Kwali and Kuje, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) claimed victory in Gwagwalada.
In Gwagwalada Area Council, the PDP candidate, Mohammed Kasim, polled 22,165 votes to defeat the APC’s Yahaya Shehu, who scored 17,788 votes. The Returning Officer, Philip Akpen, while announcing the result, declared Kasim winner, stating that he satisfied the requirements of the law and was duly returned elected.
A breakdown of the Gwagwalada results showed:

In Bwari Area Council, the APC candidate, Joshua Ishaku emerged victorious with 18,466 votes. The Returning Officer, Mohammed Nurudeen, declared him winner after confirming he met the legal requirements.

ZLP – 3,515
In AMAC, Christopher Maikalangu of the APC was re-elected after polling 40,295 votes. The AMAC Collation Officer, Andrew Abue, announced that Maikalangu scored the highest votes and was duly returned elected.

SDP – 2,185
NNPP – 1,694
PDP – 3,398
In Abaji Area Council, Umar Abubakar of the APC won with 15,536 votes, defeating the PDP candidate who polled 4,547 votes, while the ADC secured 37 votes.
In Kwali Area Council, the APC’s Nuhu Daniel scored 17,032 votes to defeat the PDP candidate, Haruna Pai, who garnered 8,575 votes. Daniel was subsequently declared winner.
Kuje Area Council also went to the APC, with its candidate, Danjuma Shekwolo, polling 17,269 votes to clinch the chairmanship seat.
The outcome consolidates the APC’s dominance in the FCT councils, leaving the PDP with only Gwagwalada among the six area councils. Further details on councillorship positions are expected as INEC completes collation.
