The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has been thrown into mourning following the death of his mother, Mama Lydia Yilwatda.
Mama Lydia passed away on Sunday morning at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) at the age of 83, after what family sources described as a brief illness.
In an official statement, Plateau State APC Publicity Secretary, Shittu Bamaiyi, paid tribute to the late matriarch, describing her as a devout Christian, a virtuous woman, and a strong pillar of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN). He noted that Mama Lydia was not only a guiding force to her family but also an inspiration to the wider APC community.
“The loss is not only personal to our National Chairman but also to the entire APC family in Plateau State and Nigeria at large,” Bamaiyi said.

Born into a Christian family, Mama Lydia, alongside her late husband, Rev. Toma Goshewe Yilwatda, played a pioneering role in the spread and growth of the church across Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, and Plateau States. Her contributions to the church and women’s fellowship remain part of her lasting legacy.
The APC further noted that her passing comes at a time when her wisdom, guidance, and prayers were most needed, particularly for her children and Prof. Yilwatda, whose role as the party’s national chairman places him at the center of Nigeria’s political stage.
Sympathizers have continued to troop into the Yilwatda family residence to console the family, while the party extended its heartfelt condolences and prayed for the peaceful repose of her soul.
Mama Lydia is remembered as a woman of faith, strength, and humility, whose life impacted not only her immediate family but the church and community at large.
