The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially secured the majority in the state House of Assembly following the defection of four lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP).
During Tuesday’s plenary in Benin, Speaker Blessing Agbebaku read a letter from the APC, formally notifying the House of its new majority status. The letter, titled “Notification of APC Majority Status in the Edo State House of Assembly,” was personally addressed to the Speaker.
The APC stated that its ranks had swelled due to the defection of Hon. Bright Iyamu (Orhionmwon II), Hon. Richard Edosa (Oredo West), Hon. Chief Sunday Ojiezele (Esan South East), and Hon. Roland Okogbe (Akoko-Edo), who have all pledged allegiance to the ruling party. The letter also hinted at further political realignments, noting that the party would communicate any consequential changes in due course.

Speaker Agbebaku confirmed the receipt of the letter and acknowledged the APC’s new majority status. He extended his best wishes to the defectors and announced that he would await further communication from the party regarding the nomination of new principal officers.
“With this development, the APC now holds the majority in the Edo State House of Assembly. We anticipate additional correspondence regarding their nominated principal officers,” Agbebaku stated.
The latest defections shift the balance of power in the 24-member Assembly, with the APC now holding 13 seats, while the PDP’s numbers have dwindled to 11. This political shake-up is expected to significantly influence legislative proceedings.
