Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is contemplating retirement from boxing following a devastating car accident in Nigeria that resulted in the deaths of two of his close friends and team members.
Joshua’s uncle, Adedamola Joshua, revealed this information, noting that the 36-year-old boxer shared his decision privately with family members after the tragic incident, which took place last week.
“The main point is that he has decided to retire from boxing. That’s something that brings us some comfort because every time he steps into the ring, we are emotionally affected,” Adedamola told reporters during a visit to their family home in Sagamu.
When asked if Joshua had clearly communicated his intention to retire from boxing, his uncle confirmed, “yes”.
The accident resulted in the deaths of two of Joshua’s close associates, Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele.
Family sources indicated that the boxer has also pledged to provide ongoing support to the families of the deceased.
Joshua attended a heartfelt funeral service for the two men at the London Central Mosque on Sunday, where their coffins were placed side by side for the Janaza, the Islamic funeral prayer.
Hundreds of mourners gathered outside the mosque before the coffins were taken to a nearby crematorium, where a wake was held later that afternoon.
In response to the tragedy, a resident, Adeniji Taiwo, expressed gratitude that Joshua survived the accident while mourning the loss of the two men.
“We thank God that we didn’t lose our son, and for those who lost their children, may God provide them comfort,” Taiwo said.
“I believe he may have fears about returning home, but I would encourage him to come back because he can’t abandon his roots. This is his home.”

“We are saddened by what happened to our son, especially since he was almost home when the accident occurred, but we are grateful, and we pray that nothing like this happens to him again. Such things can happen anywhere. God will continue to protect him and all of us; no one in Remo wishes him harm; he is our pride.”
“There are many things we’ve heard, but this is a Christian family, and we approach everything with faith,” he added.
“When something like this occurs, it can evoke strong emotions, but over time, you realize that this is always your foundation.”
The traffic accident involving the renowned boxer Anthony Joshua occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
