American Danielle Collins ends World No. 2 Świątek’s reign at the Italian Open

American female tennis player Danielle Collins has ended the reign of second-ranked female tennis player Iga Świątek, at the Italian Open.

Świątek has had a strong hold on the Italian Open of late, having triumphed in three of the last four years with her dominance on clay courts.

Collins, seeded at No. 29, secured a convincing victory with scores of 6-1, 7-5 against Świątek, who struggled with her serve and was broken five times in a row during the contest.

Following this defeat, Świątek will lose her second-place ranking, concluding an impressive streak of over three years in which she maintained a position among the top two players globally.

For Collins, this victory represented only her second win against Świątek in their nine encounters, allowing her to advance to the fourth round, where she will compete against Elina Svitolina.

“Having lost to Iga multiple times, you definitely gather lessons from those encounters,” she stated afterwards, as reported by the WTA.

“Despite her recent victories over me, I’ve performed some of my finest tennis in those matches.”

Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner has made a ‘remarkable’ comeback to tennis following his suspension for doping.

Sinner marked a victorious return to tennis on Saturday after completing a three-month ban due to doping, defeating Mariano Navone in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Italian Open held in his home country.

Despite being absent from the sport, the Italian still retains the top global ranking and showcased that strength by defeating the talented Navone 6-3, 6-4 in Rome.

This match was Sinner’s first since coming back from a three-month suspension after he tested positive for Clostebol, an anabolic steroid, twice in March of the previous year.
