Former Minister of Transportation and two-time Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has opened up about the profound influence of his predecessor, Dr. Peter Odili, crediting him as one of the most instrumental figures in his personal and political journey. In a deeply emotional tribute, Amaechi revealed that apart from his late father, no one has impacted his life more than Dr. Odili.

In a candid interview, Amaechi spoke about the man who helped shape his destiny, emphasizing that regardless of political tensions or shifting loyalties, his respect for Odili remains untouchable. “Dr. Peter Odili was one. In my growing up, he had a huge role to play. That’s why no matter what anyone says or does, I won’t talk negatively about Dr. Odili. I will never insult him. Never! Never!” Amaechi declared, visibly moved.

Amaechi, who once served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly under Odili’s administration, recalled key moments that highlighted the former governor’s unwavering support. One such moment, he said, was during the death of his father—a time when he had no financial capacity to handle burial expenses. “He had a huge influence in my life. He even helped me bury my dad when I had no money. I find it difficult to forget that,” Amaechi said.

Despite years of political rivalry and ideological differences, the former minister insisted that his gratitude to Odili goes beyond politics. “Sometimes, you’re tempted to set the record straight or confront him. But then you remember he was an instrument God used to lift you. That knowledge keeps you grounded in respect,” he added.

Dr. Peter Odili, who governed Rivers State from 1999 to 2007, was briefly succeeded by Celestine Omehia. However, a landmark Supreme Court ruling later nullified Omehia’s governorship and installed Amaechi as the legitimate PDP candidate in 2007, further entrenching his legacy in the state’s political history.

Amaechi’s heartfelt remarks offer a rare moment of humility and gratitude in Nigeria’s often fiery political arena, highlighting the enduring human connections that transcend party lines and power plays. As the political climate continues to evolve, his tribute to Odili serves as a powerful reminder that personal loyalty and gratitude still matter in the game of politics.
