At his official presentation as the new head coach of Real Madrid, Xabi Alonso proclaimed the dawn of a new chapter.
The 43-year-old was appointed to lead his former team on a three-year contract this past Sunday, taking over from Carlo Ancelotti, who will now manage the Brazilian national team.
The previous season was underwhelming for Madrid, as they lost their La Liga title to Barcelona, were defeated by their rivals in the Copa del Rey and Spanish Supercopa finals, and were eliminated in the Champions League quarter-finals by Arsenal.
However, in a speech delivered at the Valdebebas training facility on Monday, Alonso stated, “This is the beginning of a new era.”
He further expressed, “Real Madrid supporters are eager to kick off this fresh chapter, to evolve, and to enhance the club’s legacy.”
“It’s a significant day. This is a date I will remember for the rest of my life. I am incredibly pleased to be here, in a place I regard as my home.”
Alonso, who secured a league and cup double with Bayer Leverkusen in the 2023-24 season, shared his reasoning behind returning to Madrid over a decade after leaving as a player.
“We possess exceptional players and a talented team, capable of achieving both present success and a bright future,” he remarked.

“This motivates me to come here filled with energy and hope that I can maximize the potential of each player and create a remarkable team.”
“I am convinced we can attain significant accomplishments that befit Real Madrid, worthy of all these European trophies and the achievements accumulated over many years.”
“My aim is to have a squad that conveys passion, energy, ambition in their play, and resonates with the fans.”
Alonso honored Ancelotti, who won three Champions League titles, two Club World Cups, and two La Liga championships during his two tenures at Los Blancos and also coached Alonso at Real and Bayern Munich.
“Carlo was my mentor, an incredible individual, and a profound influence. Without his guidance, I likely wouldn’t be here,” he mentioned.
“It is with great pride and honor that I now take over and continue his legacy.”
Alonso’s new role will formally begin on June 1, ahead of the upcoming Fifa Club World Cup next month.
