World number one Carlos Alcaraz has announced a surprise split from his long-time coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, bringing an end to one of modern tennis’ most successful player–coach partnerships.
Alcaraz, 22, disclosed on Wednesday that both parties had mutually agreed to go their separate ways ahead of the 2026 tennis season, without offering further details behind the decision.
The Spaniard has worked with Ferrero since his teenage years, a collaboration that played a central role in his rapid rise to the top of men’s tennis and his emergence as a six-time Grand Slam champion.
Neither Alcaraz nor Ferrero provided an official explanation for the separation, and the reigning world number one has yet to indicate whether a new coach will be appointed.
In a brief statement, Alcaraz paid tribute to his former mentor, expressing gratitude for their years together.

“Thank you for making childhood dreams come true. We started this journey when I was just a kid, and you have been with me every step of the way, both on and off the court. I’ve cherished every moment,” Alcaraz said.
Ferrero, 45, a former ATP world number one, played a pivotal role in shaping Alcaraz’s career. Working from his tennis academy near Murcia, Ferrero guided the young star through his professional breakthrough and all six of his Grand Slam triumphs.
The split marks the end of an era for Alcaraz, whose partnership with Ferrero has been widely regarded as one of the most stable and productive coaching relationships on the ATP Tour.
