In a move to alleviate the financial burden on retirees, the Akwa Ibom State government has announced an increase in the monthly pensions of its senior citizens.
Governor Uno Eno approved the upward review of the pension payment following the conclusion of the pension verification exercise in the state.
In a statement on Tuesday from the office of the Head of the Civil Service of the state, Elder Effiong Essien, the government stated that N27,000.00 will be added across to all pensioners in the state with effect from September 1, 2025.
“Consequent upon the implementation of the new minimum wage of N80,000.00 and the conclusion of the verification exercise of pensioners in the state, the Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has graciously approved the implementation of N27,000 pension increment each to all pensioners in the state public service with effect from 1st September, 2025,” the statement reads.

Reacting, a pensioner in the state, Mrs. Eno Akpan, appreciated the governor for his commitment towards improving the welfare of pensioners.
“I thank the governor for doing this to us, it goes a long way to show that the governor is committed to improving the welfare of pensioners in the state,” she said.
It would be recalled that the governor had earlier approved a flat rate increase of N15,000 only for pensioners who retired between 2007 and 2011, and N20,000 for others who retired before 2007, with effect from April 1, 2024.
