Senate President Godswill Akpabio has extended heartfelt congratulations to Governor Monday Okpebholo following the Supreme Court’s unanimous verdict affirming him as the duly elected governor of Edo State. The judgment, which upheld the outcome of the September 2024 gubernatorial election, was hailed by Akpabio as a landmark victory for democracy and a resounding endorsement of the people’s will.
In a personally signed statement released Friday in Abuja, Akpabio praised the apex court’s ruling as a clear confirmation that the Edo electorate had spoken decisively at the polls. He described the judgment as a reinforcement of the transparency and integrity of the electoral process that brought Okpebholo to power.
“The Supreme Court has confirmed that the election truly represented the voice of the majority of the people in Edo State. It shows that the election was conducted fairly and openly,” Akpabio said, adding that the judgment affirms the strength of democracy and the power of grassroots mobilization.
The Supreme Court’s decision rejected an appeal filed by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Asue Ighodalo, who had challenged Okpebholo’s victory. The court ruled that the evidence presented failed to demonstrate any substantial irregularities, voter fraud, or breaches of electoral laws capable of overturning the result.
Akpabio emphasized that the ruling not only cements Okpebholo’s mandate but also highlights the growing confidence of Edo citizens in the All Progressives Congress (APC). He noted that Okpebholo’s emergence reflected a broad-based connection with the people, grounded in service and genuine engagement.

Describing the governor as a leader with proven commitment, Akpabio expressed optimism about Okpebholo’s leadership and his ability to deliver lasting development across Edo State. He reiterated the Senate’s readiness to support the new administration in its efforts to accelerate growth, strengthen governance, and improve the quality of life for citizens.
“On behalf of my family, constituents, and the Senate of Nigeria, I offer my warmest congratulations to you and the wonderful people of Edo on this important Supreme Court victory,” Akpabio stated. “I wish you success and assure you that the Senate will support you in advancing the state’s progress and development.”
Akpabio concluded by expressing hope for a strong partnership between the federal legislature and Governor Okpebholo’s administration, as both work toward fostering inclusive growth and democratic consolidation in Edo and beyond.
