More than 1,200 houses have been destroyed following severe flooding in Damboa and Chibok Local Government Areas of Borno State, officials from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) have confirmed.

A rapid assessment conducted by SEMA revealed that a total of 1,209 houses were affected across several communities.

The breakdown includes 1,103 houses damaged in Gumsuri, Wovi, and Garjang in Damboa, and another 106 houses in Mboa, Whuntaku, and Yarchida villages in Chibok.

Foundation urges proactive action to prevent flooding disasters

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum had earlier directed the agency to swiftly assess and intervene in communities hit by recent floods and windstorms.

Expressing his condolences, Governor Zulum said: “I received with profound sorrow the sad news of the devastating flood disaster in Gumsuri, Wovi and Garjang in Damboa as well as the people of Mboa, Whuntaku and Yarchida villages of Chibok local government which claimed lives and displaced many families. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families and all those affected by these disasters.”

During an on-the-spot assessment, SEMA’s Acting Director General, Ali Abdullahi Isa, assured victims of prompt relief support.

“As directed by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, we have carried out an on-the-spot assessment of all the areas affected by the flash flood in the two local governments,” Isa said, praying that such disasters do not recur.

Meanwhile, SEMA has also provided relief materials to families affected by a windstorm in Rumirgo town of Askira Uba Local Government Area. The distribution was conducted in the presence of the Vice Chairman and the District Head of the area.

Authorities say efforts are ongoing to support displaced families and restore normalcy in the affected communities.
The recent flood, as noticed by the Trumpet, came barely a year after the Alau dam disaster that claimed several lives and as well destroyed properties worth several millions of Naira.
