The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, has reaffirmed Africa’s significance in China’s diplomatic agenda, highlighting the nation’s enduring tradition of prioritizing the continent. For 35 consecutive years, the Chinese Foreign Minister’s first overseas visit of the year has always been to Africa—a practice that Ambassador Yu described as a “distinctive feature of China’s diplomacy.”
Taking to his official X handle, Yu Dunhai emphasized the strong and enduring bond between China and Africa. He referenced a recent meeting between China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, and Namibian President-elect Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, where Wang Yi shed light on the rationale behind this tradition.

According to Wang Yi, China’s commitment to starting each year’s diplomatic engagements in Africa stems from its deep respect for the historic and mutually beneficial relationship between the two regions. He noted that during pivotal moments, such as Africa’s struggles for independence and liberation, as well as the ongoing pursuit of mutual development, China and Africa have consistently demonstrated mutual understanding, trust, and unwavering support for one another.
Wang Yi further expressed that the tradition of prioritizing Africa is more relevant than ever, as global challenges necessitate stronger cooperation between the regions. “The development of China and Africa represents the rise of the Global South and the strengthening of the forces of justice,” Wang Yi stated.
