Nigeria’s track and field community is witnessing renewed momentum as the Athletics Federation of Nigeria rolls out reforms and competitions under the leadership of its president, Tonobok Okowa.

Since assuming office, Okowa has consistently spoken about building a sustainable structure for athletes, with emphasis on talent discovery, regular competition and international readiness. At the recent AFN National Trials, he expressed confidence in the depth of talent emerging across events.

“What we are witnessing here is a testament to the bright future of track and field in Nigeria,” Okowa said, adding that the federation’s vision is to create a system where athletes have a clear pathway to excellence through proper investment and unity within the athletics community.

The federation began 2026 with its first quarter Commonwealth camping programme in Asaba, Delta State, alongside the maiden edition of the AFN Golden League, which concluded in Benin City, Edo State. The series has already produced standout performances that signal strong prospects ahead of major international competitions.

Oseiwe Salami claimed the men’s 400m hurdles title with a personal best of 52.25 seconds, improving on his previous mark set in 2024. In the women’s 100m hurdles, Janet Sunday broke the 14-second barrier for the first time, clocking 13.67 seconds in her season opener to emerge overall champion.

Wisdom Musa Great opened his 110m hurdles campaign with a commanding 14.31 seconds performance after returning from competition in Moscow, where he featured in the 60m hurdles. In the field events, Adams Kure delivered a strong series in the javelin, including a best throw of 79.81 metres to secure overall victory. Effiom Victoria Kparkpa led the women’s category, while Ezinne Johan Ozioko dominated the hammer throw event.

Technical Director Gabriel Okon described the Golden League as a vital platform to ensure consistent competition for Nigerian athletes throughout the year. He noted that regular exposure is essential for international success and commended the AFN president for supporting the initiative and approving financial incentives for top performers.

The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Amadin Desmond Enabulele, praised the federation for selecting Edo State as host of the inaugural series. He said the decision reinforces the state’s growing reputation as a centre for major sporting events.

With a busy athletics calendar ahead, stakeholders believe sustained collaboration among administrators, coaches, officials and athletes will determine the long-term gains of the current reforms. Under Okowa’s stewardship, the AFN appears focused on restoring Nigeria’s prominence on the continental and global stage.
