The Nigerian socio-political landscape has lost one of its most venerable figures with the passing of Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo, the esteemed leader of Afenifere, at the age of 96. Adebanjo, widely respected as an elder statesman and a prominent nationalist, died peacefully at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State, this morning.

Adebanjo’s family confirmed the sad news in a statement released just minutes after his peaceful departure. “He passed away peacefully this morning, Friday, February 14, 2025, at his Lekki home in Lagos at the age of 96,” the family announced, indicating that he was surrounded by loved ones at the time of his passing.

Chief Adebanjo was not only a distinguished legal practitioner but also played pivotal roles in Nigerian politics, having served as the organizing secretary of the Action Group and later becoming a national leader of Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba socio-political organization advocating for the rights and interests of the Yoruba people.

His contributions to Nigerian politics included a deep commitment to federalism, justice, and national unity. Adebanjo was known for his forthright opinions and his advocacy for restructuring Nigeria towards a true federal system, which he believed would foster more equitable development across the nation’s diverse ethnic groups.

His legacy also includes significant moments like the endorsement of Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential elections by his faction of Afenifere, showcasing his influence in shaping political narratives and support bases. His leadership within Afenifere was marked by a period of division within the group, reflecting the broader political and ideological battles in Nigeria.

Chief Adebanjo is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, as well as his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The family has requested privacy as they mourn, with details about funeral arrangements to be communicated in due time.

Tributes have been pouring in from across the political spectrum, with many acknowledging Adebanjo’s dedication to Nigeria’s development and his unwavering stand on matters of national importance. Social media platforms are filled with messages from citizens and political figures alike, commemorating his life and contributions.

Afenifere, under his leadership, has been a voice for the Yoruba people and for national restructuring, advocating for principles that Adebanjo believed would lead to a more prosperous and fair Nigeria. His death marks the end of an era, but his ideals continue to inspire many who share his vision for a restructured Nigeria.

As Nigeria mourns this significant loss, the focus shifts to how Adebanjo’s legacy will influence future political discourse and the ongoing discussions about the country’s governance structure. His life was one of service, marked by a steadfast commitment to justice, equity, and the rule of law.
