The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has sounded the alarm over Nigeria’s deepening political imbalance, warning that the country is fast slipping into a one-party system under the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The party has called on Nigerians to rally together and resist what it describes as a dangerous drift that threatens the nation’s democratic foundation.
In a statement, the ADC condemned the recent wave of defections by serving and former politicians into the APC, describing it as a coordinated move to consolidate unchecked political power. The party expressed concern that these defections are eroding opposition strength, reducing political diversity, and paving the way for authoritarian governance.
Of particular concern to the ADC is the recent appointment of a former national commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the national chairman of the APC. The party questioned the credibility of such a move, stressing that INEC, as an electoral umpire, is expected to remain neutral and above partisan politics.

The ADC accused President Bola Tinubu of undermining Nigeria’s democratic institutions by positioning former electoral officials in political leadership roles, warning that this undermines public confidence in the electoral process and raises doubts about future elections being free and fair.
As concerns mount over the shrinking political space and rising dominance of the APC, the ADC is urging civil society groups, opposition parties, and citizens to speak out and take action to protect Nigeria’s democracy. The party warned that if left unchecked, the country risks falling into a de facto one-party state, stifling dissent, weakening accountability, and reversing years of democratic progress.
