Students of the Adamawa State Polytechnic, Yola, on Monday, took to the streets to protest the prolonged power outage being experienced on campus.

The demonstration, which began peacefully within the school grounds, quickly spilled into nearby streets.

Chanting slogans such as “we want electricity,” the students drew attention to their grievances, disrupting vehicular and economic activities in the surrounding areas.

However, the situation escalated when clashes broke out between some protesters and unsuspecting passersby, prompting the swift intervention of police officers drafted to restore order and prevent further violence.

The students complained that they had endured harsh conditions for over three months following the disruption of the institution’s electricity supply.

Many described the situation as unbearable, citing the negative impact on their academic performance and daily lives.

“Our studies are suffering. It’s our right as students to have access to basic amenities like electricity, water, and shelter,” said one protester.

“We pay our school fees and expect at least these necessities to be provided.”

Another student lamented the hardships, saying, “we can’t study effectively at night, we struggle to sleep due to the intense heat in Yola, and we even have to search for water outside the campus to bathe.”

The protesting students called on both the school management and the state government to take urgent action to restore electricity and improve living conditions on campus.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the management of the polytechnic nor the state government had issued an official response to the students’ demands.
