The political atmosphere in Adamawa State took a dramatic turn as the Chief Magistrate Court II in Yola ordered the remand of Alhaji Husseini Bello Gambo Nakura, a close ally of Senator Aishatu Binani and Chairman of Concerned Citizens Adamawa State, over allegations of hate speech and defamation targeting top national figures.

The case, presided over by Magistrate M. A. Adamu is set to resume on September 17, 2025. Nakura is facing charges bordering on defamation, incitement, use of offensive language, and disturbance of public peace, contrary to sections 378, 379, 385, and 80 of the penal code.

According to the prosecution, led by Ezekiel Jidauna Esq., the police acted on a petition dated September 8, 2025, filed by Barrister N. I. El-Yakub on behalf of the complainants. In the petition, Nakura was accused of granting an interview on a Hausa-language online TV station where he allegedly made inflammatory remarks against several prominent Nigerians.

Those mentioned in his alleged outburst include the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, Dr. Modi Halilu, and Barrister Mustapha Salihu, National Vice Chairman of the APC for the Northeast. Nakura reportedly accused them of theft, misappropriation of fertilizer meant for farmers, and distribution of expired food items to the public.

The prosecution further alleged that Nakura claimed Senator Aishatu Binani’s chances in the last governorship election were sabotaged by the same individuals, remarks they say could incite unrest and damage political reputations.

When the charges were read, the 53-year-old defendant pleaded not guilty. His lawyer, E. O. Odo Esq., applied for bail, insisting that the offences were bailable under the 1999 Constitution as amended, citing Section 36 (5) and Section 163 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law, 2018.

Prosecutor Jidauna, however, urged the court to grant an adjournment to enable the police to assemble witnesses. The court subsequently ordered Nakura’s remand in prison custody until the next hearing date.

The high-profile case has already sparked heated debate in political and legal circles, with many watching closely to see how the trial could reshape the political landscape in Adamawa ahead of future elections.
