In a major boost for public transportation in Nigeria’s capital, the Abuja Light Rail has successfully moved over 250,000 passengers in just 100 days since the start of its commercial operations. This milestone highlights the growing reliance on the rail system for efficient, safe, and fast travel across Abuja and its surrounding areas.

The 2 major lines span 45 kilometers of rail, connecting key locations such as the city center, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Kubwa satellite town, and the national railway network.

With 12 fully operational stations providing seamless connectivity for thousands of commuters daily. The high-speed trains reach up to 100 kilometers per hour, ensuring timely transit across the Federal Capital Territory.

The Abuja Light Rail system, developed and managed by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), has drastically reduced the notorious traffic congestion in Abuja. Its reliable service offers residents a comfortable alternative to the overcrowded road networks.

In a statement shared on social media, John Zhao, a representative of CCECC Nigeria, celebrated the success of the project, stating:

“In just over 100 days, the Abuja Rail Mass Transit has transported over 250,000 passengers. This achievement reflects our commitment to providing a safe and efficient transport system, enhancing urban mobility, and reducing traffic bottlenecks.”

Although the Abuja Light Rail was initially launched in 2018 during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, operations faced delays due to infrastructural challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic. However, recent investments and focused rehabilitation efforts have accelerated its growth.

In 2023, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) awarded a ₦5 billion contract to CCECC for the rehabilitation of the rail system. Additionally, in October 2023, the Federal Executive Council approved a further ₦5.5 billion for access road construction, connecting various communities along the rail route.

To encourage public adoption, President Bola Tinubu introduced a two-month free ride initiative upon the launch of Phase 1 of the rail line. The offer was extended through the end of 2024, fueling a surge in ridership and bringing immense public interest to the new transit option.

With further upgrades planned and a 2024 budget allocation of ₦29 billion for continued rehabilitation and development, the Abuja Light Rail is poised to transform the city’s transport landscape and improve the quality of life for its residents.

Beyond its positive impact on transportation, the Abuja Light Rail project has contributed to job creation. Over 10,000 Nigerian jobs were generated during its construction, solidifying the rail system’s role as a critical infrastructure investment for both economic growth and urban development.

As the Abuja Light Rail continues to expand, it offers an exciting vision for the future of public transportation in Nigeria. With continued government support and public interest, this rail system promises to become an indispensable part of daily life, improving commutes, boosting the economy, and reducing traffic congestion for years to come.
