Attorneys for President Bola Tinubu have submitted a motion in a U.S. court to enforce a judge’s decision that safeguards his personal records with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
The motion, filed on September 4, 2025, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, aims to prevent any further release of Tinubu’s records under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
His legal team contends that disclosing additional documents would violate his privacy rights and compromise his position as Nigeria’s president.
This request follows a directive from Judge Beryl Howell, who instructed the FBI and DEA to process and release any non-exempt records of Tinubu.

Although the agencies have already disclosed some information, his lawyers argue that the remaining files should remain confidential, referencing FOIA Exemption 7(C) and the U.S. Privacy Act.
The situation has sparked significant public discussion in Nigeria, with critics calling for full transparency and supporters asserting that the president has nothing to conceal.
Court records indicate that the motion is currently with the judge, who is anticipated to make a ruling on the issue soon.
