The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, is partnering with the Rotary Club of Maitama, Abuja, to enhance its humanitarian efforts and promote ethical leadership in the community.

During a visit to the NUJ FCT secretariat in Abuja, the President of the Rotary Club, Rotarian Maha Longe, expressed that both organizations share similar values focused on service, honesty, and integrity.

“Rotary aims to improve communities through various service projects, while journalism focuses on enlightening society with truthful information,” Longe stated.

“Together, we can accomplish much more than we could alone.”

Longe suggested several ways they could work together, including promoting Rotary’s humanitarian projects in the media, holding joint seminars on the importance of accurate information and ethics in public service, and collaborating on community development initiatives.

The delegation from Rotary included members like Winny Foneka, Anthonia Unigwe, Annmarie Adamu, Kazeem Abdulrahim, and Helen Fawoye, among others.

Chairperson of the NUJ FCT Council, Ms. Grace Ike, welcomed the partnership, stating that the union and Rotary have a shared goal of serving the public.

“NUJ FCT is excited to collaborate with Rotary to highlight your activities. Our mission is to amplify important voices, and that’s where we come in,” she said.

She also noted that journalism itself is a form of service, aligning with Rotary’s mission.

The NUJ FCT leader praised Rotary’s contributions in areas like the provision of clean water, sanitation, education, and health.

Ms. Ike promised that journalists would work hard to keep the public informed about the club’s activities.

Rotarian Longe also urged the media to support Rotary International’s main project, the fight against polio, which is now nearly eradicated.

“We only have 0.1% left to tackle. As long as one child carries the virus, it poses a risk to every child,” she emphasized.

“This is where we need your help the most.”

The meeting concluded with both organizations agreeing to continue their partnership, especially in raising public awareness and reaching out to local communities.
