The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has clarified that no individual or group has the authority to stop any Igbo person from contesting the 2027 presidential election. The group stressed that every Igbo politician with party membership and ambition has the constitutional right to pursue the presidency.
President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, made the clarification in a statement released on Wednesday. He dismissed recent publications suggesting that the organisation had barred Igbo candidates from the 2027 presidential race, describing them as fake news that should be ignored.
According to him, Ohanaeze Ndigbo remains a socio-cultural body and not a political party, and therefore cannot dictate or decide who should contest in any election. He emphasized that the group’s role is not to interfere with political ambitions but to promote unity and protect the interests of Ndigbo within Nigeria.
