The Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has faulted the acting Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Sunday Samuel, over his claim that the institution has succeeded in clearing the salary backlog of lecturers from the monthly subvention of N500 million given by the state government.
Prof. Olowo, who was appointed in August 2024, had on Thursday, August 21, 2025, told a select group of journalists that the university was enjoying peace, stability, regular payment of salaries, and had paid all the outstanding salaries of staff it inherited from the previous administration of the university.
In a joint statement in Ekpoma by the Chairman, Dr. Cyril Onogbosele, and Secretary, Dr. William Odion, ASUU described as insensitive, untrue, and misleading the disclosure by the university administration that it had cleared all the backlog of salaries owed to staff.
The ASUU officials disclosed that the union had written several letters and held several meetings with the university’s administration over the non-payment of the outstanding salaries of many staff for a long time without resolving the matter.
They insisted that, among other things, the university was still in default of payment of outstanding salaries of some staff for up to 29 months and above, 13th month salary, staff promotion arrears, N70,000, and 25-35 percent minimum wage increase arrears.

Besides, they stated that the lecturers are also being owed responsibility allowance (for office holders), and deducted third-party monies (ASUU dues and staff welfare savings) for 15 months (September 2020 – November 2021), amounting to billions of naira.
The union implored the authorities of the state-owned tertiary institution to toe the path of truth in dealing with the challenges confronting the university, avoid misinformation of the public, and urgently resolve the problem of non-payment of all outstanding salaries of staff.
While appealing to Governor Monday Okpebholo to further assist the university to deal with the problem of non-payment of outstanding salaries of staff, the union, however, acknowledged the interventions by the governor to reposition the school.
