Netizens doubt FG’s reduction of kidney dialysis cost in federal hospitals

Nigerians on social media are doubting the federal government’s sincerity in reducing the cost of kidney dialysis in federal health facilities.

President Bola Tinubu had on Monday announced the lowering of the cost of kidney dialysis in federal hospitals.

He said that under a new policy, the price for each dialysis session would drop from N50,000 to just N12,000, representing a 76 percent reduction.

While this sounds promising, many Nigerians on social media are skeptical about the implementation of the presidential directive. Reports from doctors and patients suggest that several federal hospitals are still charging much higher fees, which contradicts the new policy of the president.

@breadshinia shared her frustration on X, saying that “there’s no federal medical center in Nigeria that offers dialysis for 12k. Let’s be honest.”

She explained her experience at a federal medical center, where she found out that the cost was around N100,000.

Also, she pointed out that another patient was faced with similar high charges, which added stress to families already dealing with health issues.

Responding to this skepticism, another X user wrote that “Nigerians are honest and know the facts. The only ones who aren’t are people like @DOlusegun and the APC government.”

This post highlights the ongoing distrust many people feel towards government promises about healthcare.

@Tony_Adewumi called the lower price “a huge lie,” recounting that patients in a federal medical center in the North-East were still facing much larger bills.

He expressed his anger, saying that “God will punish those who are using the lives of innocent Nigerians for politics.”

@The_onbeatable chimed in, stating that “I don’t know of any federal medical center in the South-West that charges 12k for dialysis.

“Most of them start at around 100k for the first session, and subsequent sessions are between 60k and 70k.”

This suggests that the announced prices might either be unrealistic or not yet put into action.
